An HDII editorial - published 8/31/2026 · 3 min read

The Blood of Dawnwalker is not built to break you. HDII voters have it at 5.82/10 across 17 ratings, and the spread is unusually tight for a brand new open-world RPG: thirteen of those seventeen votes sit between 4 and 6. That is the shape of a game people got through without ever hitting a wall, and the early critical reaction has landed in almost exactly the same place.
The difficulty menu does the heavy lifting
Easy through hard is the baseline, but the individual toggles matter more than whichever preset you land on. You can open healing up to your full inventory instead of restricting it to the quick-use pad, turn on automatic blocking, and adjust the rest piece by piece. Anyone who is here for Coen's story and the world around it can file the combat down until it stops getting in the way. That flexibility is the clearest reason the votes cluster where they do.
Duelist mode is the interesting experiment
Duelist strips the directional indicators off incoming attacks and shrinks Coen's stamina pool, then hands back a serious concession: enemies carry far less health. It is not a straight difficulty increase, and that is what makes it worth paying attention to. Taking away the interface crutch forces you to read animations instead of prompts, while the shorter fights mean you spend less time being punished for learning. It is aimed at players who find indicator-driven combat solved rather than players who want fatter health bars.
Parrying is where the difficulty actually lives
Combat is built around the parry, and the reviews agree with the voters that the ceiling here is low but the floor has a step in it. Refuse to learn the timing and fights stretch into long grinding exchanges that make the game feel harder than it is. Commit to it and the same encounters fold in seconds as parries chain together. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice sits at 8.59 because it gates progress behind that skill. Dawnwalker only makes your life easier once you pick it up, and it leaves other builds open if you would rather not.
Is The Blood of Dawnwalker Hard? Final Verdict
At 5.82/10 it is a moderate game with a difficulty menu deep enough to move it in either direction. That puts it above The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at 4.53, comfortably below Elden Ring at 7.58, and nowhere near parry-obsessed Lies of P at 8.00. Only two of the seventeen voters so far have gone as high as 8. If you want Dawnwalker to fight back, Duelist mode is the setting to find.
