An HDII editorial - published 6/17/2026 · 2 min read

Empulse wants to be hard the way Titanfall 2 was hard: not through bullet sponges, but through a skill ceiling most players never reach. 1047 Games opened a free demo ahead of the June 24 early access launch. The floor is fun. The ceiling is brutal.
Movement is the real difficulty
The whole game is built around chaining movement into a flowstate: wall-runs into grapples into slides into P.A.I.N.T. boosts, every input feeding the next. Players who nail it describe some of the best movement in the genre. Players who don't spend matches getting outmaneuvered before they can land a shot. That skill gap is where the difficulty lives.
The gunfights punish hesitation
Time-to-kill is short and the weapons feel close to hitscan, so half a second of bad positioning ends you. Even players with top-tier aim-trainer credentials report fights staying difficult at full speed. Add a contested mech that can swing a whole round, plus a melee-heavy close range, and there is a lot to process at once.
Easy to enjoy, hard to stick with
The recurring concern from the demo is the one that dogs The Finals: a high skill ceiling makes it tough for newcomers to stay. If you came up on Titanfall 2 or Splitgate, you will feel at home quickly. If you didn't, expect a steep climb before it clicks.
Is Empulse Hard? Final Verdict
Early HDII votes put Empulse at 7.4/10 from 13 ratings, and the spread says plenty: more than a third rated it a 9, while the rest landed between 5 and 7. That gap is the skill ceiling, measured.
