It's not too challenging, but the health and dying mechanic is weird. If you die, you start again in the same scene, so dying isn't too punishing, but you also tend to die a LOT, so it's not hard, but moreso a nuisance. Healing is also annoying.
Super Metroid is my favourite game of all time. It's not the most difficult, but has a few moments that are definitely a challenge. Maridia is difficult to navigate. Ridley is a tricky one. There's at least one area you have to find by walking through a wall with no telegraphs.
